そもそも、石油はなぜエネルギー源のチャンピオンなのだろうか？

　エネルギーを解説した本やサイトは、掃いて捨てるほどあるが、この点を的確に説明しているものは意外に少ない。

　その理由は、まず産出された石油の持つエネルギー量と石油を産出するのに必要なエネルギー量の比率（産出／投入比）が、200～300倍と桁はずれに効率が良いことだ。

　つまり、石油1バレルで、新たに石油200～300バレルを獲得できるという、驚異的な拡大再生産能力である。その理由は、石油が通常高い圧力で自噴するからである。

　さらに、同じ体積・重量で石炭のほぼ2倍の熱量があり、同じ体積で水素の3000倍、天然ガスの1000倍の熱量がある（1気圧下）からである。しかも、常温常圧下で液体であり、揮発性も高くないので、どんな容器でも貯蔵、輸送が可能であり、消費現場でも出力調整が極めて容易である。

　環境負荷的にも、石炭に比べると、産出現場でも消費現場でも汚染物質排出ははるかに少なく、またCO2排出量も2～3割程度少ない。この結果、石油製品の販売価格、すなわち使用価値に比べて生産・精製・運搬の平均コストが1／5程度と極めて小さく、結果として世界全体の石油産業で、ほぼ日本や中国のGDPに匹敵するほどの「レント」、すなわち粗利益を生み出す。

　このほとんどは、産油国と消費国の石油税やガソリン税などの税収となる。これほど莫大な富を生み出す産業は他にない。このように石油は、圧倒的に優れた低エントロピー・エネルギー源である。
